Episode 11: Tony Kock

Welcome to Behind the Pixels, an exclusive interview series that takes you on a captivating journey into the world of visual effects through the perspectives of our talented individuals.

In this episode, we sit down with Tony Kock, Executive Producer at UFX Studios. We dive into his journey in the VFX world and explore his role within the studio, with a special spotlight on his involvement with the BIF Market, a key event UFX Studios is proud to partner with once again.

Hi there, Tony! As a quick introduction, could you guide us through your journey as an executive producer in the VFX world, and how it eventually led you to UFX Studios?

The journey of most executive producers in the VFX field usually begins by acquiring an in-depth knowledge of the creative and technical aspects of visual effects production.

For me, my journey began at Filmmore, a complete post-production, editing and visual effects service, where I started working as a DI producer after several years in advertising. Then in 2017, I left the company and joined UFX Studios, which was looking for producers. That’s how I stepped into the VFX world!

What does a typical day look like for you at UFX Studios?

My day begins with a script, either for a feature film or a TV series. After reading it, I draw up an estimate with the help of a VFX supervisor. Then, we note all the scenes which hold potential for visual effects. This helps outlining the VFX budget needed for the project. Afterwards, we assure continuous communication with the producers right up to the start of shooting.

Let’s talk about the BIF Market! UFX Studios renewed its partnership with the festival’s market this year, could you break down what that collaboration actually looks like in practice?

UFX Studios actively participates in the BIF Market by engaging in various networking events, workshops, and panel discussions. This involvement provides valuable opportunities for industry professionals to connect, share insights, and explore potential collaborations within the genre film sector.

Why was it important, for you personally and for the studio, to be part of the BIF Market again this year?
And how does this kind of partnership align with UFX’s long-term vision?

UFX Studio’s visibility at festivals is important… especially now that we have our own visual identity! The great thing about the BIF Market is that you have a wide range of profiles present during the festival: writers, directors and producers are all reunited in one place. This gives the opportunity to find out more about the projects and discuss them separately with each of them. Through this partnership, UFX Studios not only contributes to the growth and development of genre cinema but also reinforces Brussels’ position as a pivotal hub for international film collaborations.

Let’s zoom in on the Hatching Ravens showcase. What are you looking for in a project or its director? And how do you go about making the final decision?

Let’s be honest, it’s not an easy task… But, at the end of the day, it’s always about the one project you remember most, the one that made a difference.

Last year, UFX awarded a prize to one of the projects, SANCTORVM. What kind of impact did you hope to create with that award ?

They say a picture speaks a thousand words, so I will leave you with Pedro Cristiani, the awarded director’s words: « Just wanted to reach out and thank you so much for your time, trust and support during the Brussels Genre Film Market. The opportunity of working alongside you and the incredible team at UFX goes beyond anything we could have hoped for. The SANCTORVM Producers couldn’t be more excited and we are very much looking forward to starting this journey together. Thank you so very much again! »

Isn’t this the best kind of impact we can create? As well as a great reward for UFX Studios!

What advice would you give to new creators or producers competing for the Hatching Ravens prize for the first time?

The script, the script and… the script! Create high quality content, it’s the key to attracting and retaining viewers!

Looking back at last year’s BIF Market edition, is there one moment that really stuck with you? Something that stayed with you after the festival?

For me it’s always about people. People with their stories, their projects, their passions. That’s what connects people to each other. After the festival, you stay in touch with some of them and hope that their project will come to life! And it’s not an easy road for them.

And to wrap things up on a fun note: if you could have worked on any fantastic or horror film, past or present, which one would it be… and why?

That would be Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth: a dark historical fantasy set in Phalangist Spain in 1944. The story is a parable inspired by fairy tales. Pan, the guardian of the place, a strange magical and demonic creature, reveals to a young girl that she is none other than the missing princess of an enchanted kingdom. Filled with surprises, dramas and a dark twists upon fairytales, Pan’s Labyrinth is both different and unique in its own genre and fills a viewer’s watching requirements with stunning entertainment throughout!
