Episode 12: FMX Edition

Welcome to Behind the Pixels, an exclusive interview series that takes you on a captivating journey into the world of visual effects through the perspectives of our talented individuals.

Today, we’re switching things up! No new faces in this episode, you’ve already met them all: Anaëlle Hart (Episode 6), Laureline Silan (Episode 9), and Morgan Hardy (Episode 8). So, what brings them back together? They’re gearing up to welcome you at our booth during the upcoming edition of FMX! Get to know the UFX Studios’ FMX team, hear about their expectations, and discover what qualities they’re looking for when meeting new talents.

Hello there! Looks like you’re all getting ready for the upcoming edition of FMX! How are you preparing for it, especially since it’ll be a first for some of you and a return for others?

L: It’s not my first FMX, so I already know how intense — and rewarding — the experience can be. This time, I’m preparing with more intention: I’ve planned specific sessions to attend and people I hope to meet.

A: I’m also returning to FMX and I’m very excited! Having experienced the unique energy of FMX before, I know how valuable it is, both for learning and create new connection. I am already checking the schedule of my favourite conferences and of course, we’re making sure our booth is ready, with some fun goodies to share!

M: Since it’s my first time attending, I’ve been asking my colleagues for recommendations on the must-see conferences. In the meantime, I’m working on putting together a realistic schedule — everything looks so interesting!

Anaëlle, you’ve already attended FMX twice. Could you walk us through how the event is structured? What’s a typical FMX experience like from a Pixel’s perspective?

A: I’d say it’s a dynamic blend of learning, inspiration, and connection. My main role there is to meet as many people as possible and introduce them to UFX Studios, share the exciting projects we’re working on!
That said, I always make time to attend a few talks. FMX is such a concentrated gathering of industry knowledge and creative minds — it would be a shame not to soak some of that in. Between sessions and conversations, it’s a full, energizing experience that always leaves me inspired and full of ideas to bring back to the studio.

What are your expectations for the event? And what are you most excited about?

M: I’m looking forward to reconnecting with former colleagues at FMX. It truly seems to be the place to discover emerging technologies in VFX, while also celebrating the incredible work showcased in the past year. Attending these conferences is both inspiring and refreshing — a great opportunity to broaden perspectives and spark new ideas.

L: I’m really looking forward to the spontaneous exchanges — the kind you don’t plan for but end up being inspiring. FMX is a melting pot of talent and ideas; it’s a creative recharge.

Why is it important for UFX Studios to be present at an event like FMX? And how does it align with the studio’s broader vision?

A: Being present at FMX is a key opportunity for UFX Studios to increase its visibility on the international stage. As one of the few VFX studios based in Belgium, events like FMX allow us to showcase our unique perspective and creative work to a broader audience — from potential collaborators and clients to future talent. It’s a chance to put Belgian VFX on the map and highlight the quality and innovation coming from a region that’s often underrepresented in the global industry.

L: Totally, FMX is a central meeting point for innovation in our industry! Being present here is part of our commitment to staying engaged with the global VFX community — to learn, share, and shape what comes next. UFX Studios prioritizes curiosity and innovation, and this is the perfect environment to cultivate both.

M: Also,UFX Studios is expanding into broader markets and taking on more ambitious projects. We’re in a growth dynamic, focused on gaining experience by recruiting new talent and strengthening our core team. In this context, attending FMX is a natural step — it’s an ideal place to exchange ideas, spot trends, and connect with like-minded professionals.

FMX has a bit of everything: talks, booths, panels,… Busy days ahead! What’s your must-have survival kit for the event? Any essentials you’ll definitely be bringing?

M: I guess I’m a bit old school:  I’ll have my notebook and a pen.

L: Same here, definitely a notebook! I still love jotting down ideas by hand between presentations.

A: My FMX survival kit includes plenty of snacks — energy boosts are essential to keep up with the pace of the event. And of course, comfy shoes — a must when you’re on your feet all day meeting people !

FMX is buzzing with creative energy and industry talent. How do you approach networking in such a dynamic setting? Any tips on how to make authentic connections?

L: I think it’s all about curiosity. Ask real questions, and don’t be afraid to let your passion show. The most genuine connections come from shared enthusiasm!

A: In a setting like FMX, I think the key is to stay curious and genuinely interested in the people you meet. I approach conversations with openness — not just to present our studio, but to listen, exchange ideas, and understand what drives others creatively. My tip? Don’t overthink it. Start simple, ask questions, and let the conversation flow naturally. People remember authentic interactions more than polished pitches. And of course, follow up afterwards, a quick message can go a long way in turning a first meeting into something meaningful.

UFX Studios’ booth (E6) will be in the Recruiting Hub! Will you be looking for specific profiles? Are there certain qualities you usually keep an eye out for during a recruiting event?

A: At the moment, we’re mainly looking for compositing artists, and we’re also starting to explore profiles in CG as we continue to grow. That said, we always keep an open mind. FMX is the perfect place to connect with passionate talent, and we know that sometimes, the right person comes along when you least expect it.

M: We are always happy to meet new people, no matter their level of experience. I guess I would say one of the main quality is to be curious but mainly to have a great team spirit. It doesn’t make sense to be the best if you are unable to work within a team, sharing tips and experience with your colleagues.

L: Indeed, we’re always on the lookout for passionate, detail-oriented artists — but more than that, people who are collaborative and adaptable. The VFX world moves fast, and soft skills often make all the difference on a production.

In the fewest words, complete the sentence to convince people to stop by UFX’s booth: « You should come say hi to us because…«

A: « -great conversations often start with a simple hello »!

L: « -we’re on the lookout for bold thinkers, team players, and passionate artists — if that’s you, let’s talk.”

M: « –we are nice people 😁 »

What advice would you give to someone who’s curious about joining the VFX industry but doesn’t quite know where to begin? Would attending FMX be a good first step?

L: Absolutely! FMX gives you a rare overview of the entire ecosystem. Come with questions, absorb as much as you can, and don’t hesitate to talk to people — everyone started somewhere.

M: Well, if you’re curious about the world of VFX, FMX offers a great opportunity to explore the current state of the industry and see firsthand what can be achieved at the highest level today.

A: Attending FMX is a fantastic first step. It’s one of the best places to get a real sense of what the VFX industry is all about. You’ll hear directly from professionals, see behind the scenes of amazing projects, and even get the chance to ask questions and connect with people who were once in your shoes. My advice is « Stay curious », don’t be afraid to ask questions, and take every opportunity to learn.

Let’s sum up your expectations! Complete this sentence: “This year at FMX, I will definitely…

L: “This year at FMX, I will definitely connect, get inspired, and scout the future of storytelling.”

M: « Bring back great goodies to my colleagues. They will kill me otherwise ! »

A « This year at FMX, I will definitely connect with inspiring people, discover new talent, and share what makes UFX Studios unique! »

And to end on a fun note: let your creativity speak! Pick three emojis that best describe how you feel about the upcoming FMX 😉
