Welcome to Behind the Pixels, an exclusive interview series that takes you on a captivating journey into the world of visual effects through the perspectives of our talented individuals.This week, we are delighted to highlight the In&Out department with Simon Pennequin, Océane Pellé, and Anna Fusacchia.

Explain your department in few words.
Simon: Our department is technically a mix of two essential functions: Data IO, and editorial. On one hand, we handle all incoming media and outgoing deliverables. On the other hand, we are closely working with the VFX supervisors and producers for a smooth workflow, we update cuts with the latest VFX, and create VFX showreels, we also manage dailies in the projection room. In summary, we ensure that the VFX artists have all the material they need to create their work and allow them to easily review those shots in context. In other words, we are a bridge between the clients and the VFX work.

How many people / types of jobs are there?
Simon: Currently, we have three people in our department. Two of us work full-time – myself and Oceane. Oceane focuses more on daily work, while I am involved in both daily tasks and developing the next steps of the department from a technical angle. Anna works part-time and mainly focuses on editing studio reels.
What are the main challenges in your department?
Océane: The main challenges in our department include adapting to client demands, working on tight schedules, dealing with daily issues that may affect the well-being of a show, and communicating both internally and externally. We also need to be multitaskers, as we constantly switch between different projects.

How does the work of the In/Out department contribute to the overall success of a VFX projects?
Anna: The work of the In/Out department contributes to the overall success of VFX projects by ensuring smooth and transparent data management for artists and maintaining the technical quality of what we send to the client.
How do you see the role of In/Out technicians evolving with advancements in VFX technologies?
Simon: With advancements in VFX technologies, the role of In/Out technicians is evolving. By automating part of our job, we can focus more on the quality and the efficiency of our work and keep improving the department. Thanks to this, the only concerns of the artists and production are the quality of the VFX.
